Our History
Several years before the East Brainerd Baptist Church was organized, the Lord laid the need for a church in this community on the heart of Reverend John J. Smith. In November of 1950, a tent revival was held by the Reverend Smith in the area of the present location of the church. At the end of the revival services 10 men stood and voted to organize a new church.
The two lots on which the church now stands were purchased in the Spring of 1951 from Mr. J.T. Logan for $800. Prayer meetings were held in homes and, according to some, in a tent, until the new church building could be built. In October of 1951 the church was officially formed by a council represented b the following churches: Boynton Baptist, Highland Park Baptist, Pleasant Hill Baptist, and Parker’s Gap Baptist. The church was officially chartered and Reverend John J. Smith was called as the first pastor.
The church met in the basement until January 1954, when the auditorium was completed. It was from those humble beginnings that a people that were seeking to follow God’s will and be a light to their community formed East Brainerd Baptist Church. The church has continued to follow God and provide His light and love to the East Brainerd community.
It continues to be the heartbeat of our church to be a place where people are “Growing Together in Christ”
